Four Best Shoes for the Long Run

To 42.2km and beyond... these shoes go the distance

TOTALSPORTS |

When it comes to running marathons, and beyond, making the right shoe choice is more critical than for the shorter distances. Here’s four of the best options for those long runs.

Extra Gel for Heel-Strikers

The Gel-Nimbus 24 uses a combination of cushioning systems to accommodate the impact force over long distances. FF Blast and Flytefoam combine in the midsole and together with a Trusstic plate provide a noticeable spring in the step off. At the rear there is extra cushioning in the form of gel, which will suit heel strikers.

The outsole features two technologies: New Asics Lite rubber and the Ahar outsole for more durability than standard rubber. Ahar is applied to areas of the midsole that see the most action, while the rest of the outsole is covered with more sustainable Asics Lite.

Those who already have Asics Gel-Nimbus 23 in the cupboard will be happy to hear that the latest version is now 10 grams lighter.

Introduction To Boost

The silhouette and geometry of the new adidas Solarglide 5 is a little more subtle than newer innovations by adidas. For those who have not run in a shoe with adidas Boost, the partial use of this cushioning system, along with the more traditional EVA system, is a great way to introduce your feet and running stride to the feel of Boost. The upper remains consistent with a lot of the adidas running stable with a low volume and lightweight design.

Something almost unique in running shoes is the split heel counter which leaves a space at the back of the shoe exposed. A large section of the heel counter has been sliced away. This is perfect for those with sensitive lower Achilles as the pressure is drastically reduced. To compensate and make sure the heel is still locked in, the heel counter extends a little further than normal in the direction of the toe.

The Popular Stalwart

The previous generation of the Pegasus saw major changes, but fans of this popular stalwart from the Nike stable will be happy to hear the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38 is a relatively minor update in comparison. The React midsole returns: This foam keeps the weight down while offering a responsive feel and durable cushioning. It’s paired with a Zoom Air unit in the forefoot that’s positioned closer to the foot for even more responsiveness. The forefoot is also slightly wider for a more accommodating fit. On the upper, midfoot webbing creates a snug wrap around your foot, and generous rubber placements on the outsole ensure the shoe will hold up through your marathon schedule.
